6 Disgusting Things You’re Eating (And You Don’t Even Know It!)

Warning: the column you’re about to read may completely kill your appetite. It’s recently been reported that the food coloring in Starbucks‘ Strawberry Frappuccinos is made from cochineal beetles. Do you REALLY know what you eat?

The FDA has guidelines for the amount of “filth” your food is allowed to contain, including insects, hair and parasites! Some of this is unavoidable – nature just isn’t sterile. But after reading this list, who would have thought Hot Dogs sound clean? Maybe next time you’ll think twice about grabbing a handful of jelly beans when walking through the office.

1. Mushrooms

Fresh is always better than canned. The plastic lining of those cans contain BPA, a chemical linked to heart attacks, obesity and cancers. Canned mushrooms have an extra surprise.

Ick Factor: The FDA allows 19 maggots and 74mites in every 3.5 ounce can off mushrooms. YUM! While maggots won’t hurt you, they aren’t very appetizing. Choose fresh mushrooms instead, and wash them.

2. Jelly Beans

Colorful, festive, and made of complete crap, Jelly Beans contain artificial food dyes, most of which are derived from petroleum materials.

Ick Factor: Orange and purple dyes have even been shown to slow down brain function, and cause behavioral problems in kids. Tell that Easter bunny to turn around – jelly beans are better as decorations than as food!
